Paid Family Leave Processes Broken – EDD California
For those of you that have to take care of a dying family member – please be aware that California’s EDD – Paid Family Leave Program is broken.
Don’t depend on any assistance from PFL for a long time – so you will have to draw on your savings. I am not sure how California thinks you can take care of a sick parent (or other family member) when they do not communicate anything to you. There is no way to talk to anyone at EDD about your PFL claim. Yes, you can file it online but when you try to follow up (by calling the EDD PFL Leave Line) you will be swamped with a number of menus that just tell you about the program. There is zero options to see if your claim has been approved or how much you will get. I have been able to get lucky once to be transferred to a hold to speak to a person and then I was promptly hung up on with a recording saying their call volume is too high. Call back later. Wow that is great customer service, don’t you think?
This leaves you in the dark. I filed for PFL on July 11 and it is the 29th and I have had heard nothing, I have received nothing in the mail – and cannot follow up on the claim. I am fortunate enough to have some savings put away but this does add additional stress on the family when you cannot work – and on top of that are caring for an elder that needs not only care 24/7 – but food, medical supplies and other items – where I guess you are supposed to make magically appear without money. Unfortunately my magic isn’t good enough to do that.
You would think that the PFL program that has been in place for 18 years would have a system where you can work online to determine if your claim has been accepted / denied / processed / and would tell you how much you may receive.
EDD – SDI basically says – too bad – so sad – we will mail you a form when we get around to it with our determination.
If you are depending on PFL to pay the bills forget about it. It won’t be there when you need it. If the program ever pays anything – I will update you in the comments field – but I am not hopeful.
In the mean time I will write EDD as well as my representative to tell them how broken the system is when I get all of the facts. It will probably be met with a form letter stating – yeah – we know. Too bad – so sad.
Good luck with your PFL Claim. From my experience so far – it is what I expected from California. I have never had a good experience with the state on doing anything timely.
