What Should It Take to Be President? A New Set of Requirements for America’s Leader
There should be a constitutional amendment outlining the requirements to become President of the United States.
For starters, there should be an IQ test for candidates. We must set the expectation that our leader has above-average intelligence. In addition, a common-sense test should also be required. A leader needs to make decisions that align with practical reasoning. For example, it doesn’t make sense to have open borders or allow men to compete in women’s sports. History has seen many brilliant people who lacked common sense, and while they can serve as advisors, they don’t have what it takes to lead effectively.
A president should also have military experience to understand the real cost of war. Whether through enlistment or education at West Point, this experience builds teamwork skills and imparts the harsh reality of losing comrades. Additionally, a leader should attend business school to grasp concepts like budgeting, trade, and financial management. Upon election, the president should take the months between November and January to undergo special training in energy policies and military defense.
It’s crucial that a president have a basic understanding of world geography, recognizing allies and adversaries and their global positions. They must read the U.S. Constitution and prove their competency in supporting and defending it through an exam.
If you’ve followed the current election cycle, you’ll have noticed the blame-shifting and dishonesty between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Harris makes promises without explaining how she’ll fulfill them. Trump, though prone to name-calling and embellishment, holds one advantage over Harris: he has already served four years as president.
As a concerned citizen, I hope the 2028 election will bring back intelligence and common sense to leadership. If Trump wins, we face another four years of his leadership, followed by uncertainty. If Harris wins, we could endure eight years of her presidency. I can’t imagine what that might look like. She appears unqualified and seems to have been positioned as a puppet by the Democratic Party. Her speeches are often incoherent word salads with little substance.
While Trump exaggerates and distorts facts, at least he has a record to reflect on. If he focused more on his accomplishments, he could become a more likable figure. On the other hand, I struggle to find any significant contributions Harris has made to benefit our country. If a reader of this blog knows of any charitable work or notable contributions she has made, I welcome that insight.
